If you’ve ever priced spindle sander sleeves, you know how ridiculously expensive they are. Despite the cost, you’ll also find that they don’t use premium abrasive materials. Why give you a good quality product when they can sell you several less than ideal ones? Think of it like the inkjet market where they control the ink and can dictate the cost.
Today, we’re going to make our own spindle sander tubes. This means that we don’t have to worry about the high cost and low yield that comes with the store bought ones. When you make your own rolls, you’re not reliant on a company. This is the perfect DIY project that will save you money.

Step by step instructions
1. Materials
In the video, I used various dowels (both wood and steel). There really isn’t much to this…dowels work really well!

2. Cutting a channel
In order to slip the sandpaper in and have it ‘catch’ by staying in the dowel, we’ll cut a half inch channel in the tube. You should try to cut it in the center but it really doesn’t have to be deal on to work.

3. Sandpaper wrap
We’ll cut a section off of the sandpaper which will leave a tail that will slide in the groove we cut in the previous step. Next we’ll wrap it and use hot glue between the sandpaper to hold it on. You should not use hot glue against the wood.

4. Operation
Simple insert into the drill press chuck and lock it down. Obviously, it will really depend on the size of your chuck as far as how large of a dowel you can use, but even with a 3/8’s dowel you can do some impressive things with it.
