The Stubby Awl Challenge!

What a lot of people don’t know about building their own tools, is that there is a bit of magic that comes with doing so.

When I bought a box of 6D nails, I realized how silly it would be to use just a couple of nails.  Instead, I thought, I’ll make a contest and give away awls.  But giving away an awl seemed flat and dull.  With this contest, I hope to prove to others how incredible it is to make their own tools from the most beautiful scraps that they have lying around.

Down below, you’ll find a webpage that shows two methods to make an awl.  Of course, you’re not limited to those two methods.  After you’ve made your awl, send a picture of it to my email address (below).  In the next 10 weeks, I’ll upload a video every Saturday on my Let’s Make Things channel.  At the end of the video you’ll see a list pop up on the screen.  If your name is on it, you won!  Please see Rules and Other Information below.

To the right, you’ll find a webpage that shows two methods to make an awl.

Rules and other information

1. It’s the winners responsibility to check to see if giveaways are permitted in their city/state/country.
2. I will ship anywhere in the world (again, where contests and giveaways are permitted), but all postage will be covered by the winner. (I am not profiting in any way from this contest and will not charge a handling fee, just the exact cost of shipping).
3. Only 1 winner per shop, please.
4. There are absolutely no other obligations required by the winner, other than taking a picture of an awl that they made, sending it to my email (below) and paying for the shipping of the item if they win.
5. Winning is a matter of first come, first served.  Your woodworking skill level will not determine your chances of winning.  In other words: Do your best, you are competing against yourself.
6. There is a chance that your picture could be used on this website, but only with your permission.
7. Be sure to leave a name when you upload your image that I may use, in case you win.  If you don’t want the internet to know that your name is Ralph Wiggum, leave me a suitable username.

This is one of the methods, except I went with the idea I spoke about in the video at the top.  Using exotic woods, mixing colors to make an awl that I would be proud to use around my shop.
